Philip N. Backstrom, Jr. Survivor Lecture Series
Hearing directly from Holocaust survivors has always been a core of Holocaust remembrance activities at Northeastern. Initially, several survivors spoke each year, meeting students in the dorms for informal conversations over two days. Later, individual survivors delivered more formal presentations, always leaving ample time for questions and conversation. Intended to educate the next generations on the horrors of genocide, the survivor lectures have always been a major draw for students, faculty and staff, and Bostonians alike. Some survivors have returned several times to share their stories with new generations of Northeastern students.
In 1998, the survivor lecture series was formally named the Philip N. Backstrom, Jr. Annual Holocaust Survivor Lecture Series. Phil Backstrom was a longtime professor of European history who was instrumental in the establishment of the Holocaust Awareness Committee in 1991. The series was named for him because of his continual concern and advocacy for human rights. Backstrom died in October 2015. We recognize the generosity of Abbot (DMSB'76) and Lisa Gilman in support of transcripts for this series.

Esther Adler was born in Germany to Polish parents and escaped as a teenager to Palestine after experiencing the events of kristallnacht. Her story includes years of separation from and reunification with her parents and brothers. She eventually graduated from the Teacher's Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York and has spent many years as a teacher in both formal and informal settings. She has published a collection of poetry and an autobiographical novel, "Best friends: a bond that survived Hitler."

Holocaust survivor Janet Appelfield discusses her experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Appelfield, who was a young child living in Poland when the war began, was hidden by a Polish woman and later by her cousin who received Polish papers. When her cousin was arrested by the Gestapo, Appelfield was taken in by a another Polish family and lived on their farm, and was reunited her father after the war. She also speaks about postwar Polish anti-Semitism.

Holocaust survivor Rena Chernoff discusses her experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Chernoff, born in Tomaszow Mazowiecki, Poland, was a young child when the war began. After being deported from hometown's ghetto and doing forced labor with her parents in the Blizyn concentration camp, she was transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. In Auschwitz-Birkenau, she and her cousin survived by living in a barracks with twins who underwent medical experiments and she was later reunited with her mother. Her cousin, Frieda Grayzel, also spoke multiple times as part of the Backstrom lecture series.

Holocaust survivor Raymond Fridmann discusses his experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Fridmann, originally from Mulhouse in Alsace-Lorraine, was captured as a young boy hiding in Vichy, France, and spent time in Dachau and Auschwitz, later escaping to the woods when the transport train he was on was derailed. Fridmann also discusses the deep psychological effects of the war on his family and how being a child a survivor impacted his postwar life.

Holocaust survivor Raymond Fridmann discusses his experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Fridmann, originally from Mulhouse in Alsace-Lorraine, was captured as a young boy hiding in Vichy, France, and spent time in Dachau and Auschwitz, later escaping to the woods when the transport train he was on was derailed. Fridmann also discusses the deep psychological effects of the war on his family and how being a child a survivor impacted his postwar life.
