Philip N. Backstrom, Jr. Holocaust Survivor Lecture Series – Holocaust and Genocide Awareness Committee Archives

Hearing directly from Holocaust survivors has always been a core of Holocaust remembrance activities at Northeastern. Initially, several survivors spoke each year, meeting students in the dorms for informal conversations over two days. Later, individual survivors delivered more formal presentations, always leaving ample time for questions and conversation. Intended to educate the next generations on the horrors of genocide, the survivor lectures have always been a major draw for students, faculty and staff, and Bostonians alike. Some survivors have returned several times to share their stories with new generations of Northeastern students.

In 1998, the survivor lecture series was formally named the Philip N. Backstrom, Jr. Annual Holocaust Survivor Lecture Series. Phil Backstrom was a longtime professor of European history who was instrumental in the establishment of the Holocaust Awareness Committee in 1991. The series was named for him because of his continual concern and advocacy for human rights. Backstrom died in October 2015. Holocaust survivor Rachel Aaronson discusses her experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Aaronson, born at the beginning of the war in Paris, was hidden in a convent with the help of partisans, and became an orphan when both her parents were killed. She discusses moving place to place during her childhood and the emotional challenges of being a "hidden child".

Esther Adler was born in Germany to Polish parents and escaped as a teenager to Palestine after experiencing the events of kristallnacht. Her story includes years of separation from and reunification with her parents and brothers. She eventually graduated from the Teacher's Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York and has spent many years as a teacher in both formal and informal settings. She has published a collection of poetry and an autobiographical novel, "Best friends: a bond that survived Hitler."

Holocaust survivor Janet Appelfield discusses her experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Appelfield, who was a young child living in Poland when the war began, was hidden by a Polish woman and later by her cousin who received Polish papers. When her cousin was arrested by the Gestapo, Appelfield was taken in by a another Polish family and lived on their farm, and was reunited her father after the war. She also speaks about postwar Polish anti-Semitism.

Holocaust survivor Samuel Bak discusses his experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Holocaust survivor Klara Barker discusses her experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Barker, originally from Debrecen, Hungary, was deported to Auschwitz along with her family and did forced labor with other women. She speaks about how she helped keep her sister alive throughout their imprisonment, and details their liberation from Bergen-Belsen (where they were sent after the Auschwitz death march) at the end of the war.

Holocaust survivor Rena Chernoff discusses her experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Chernoff, born in Tomaszow Mazowiecki, Poland, was a young child when the war began. After being deported from hometown's ghetto and doing forced labor with her parents in the Blizyn concentration camp, she was transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. In Auschwitz-Birkenau, she and her cousin survived by living in a barracks with twins who underwent medical experiments and she was later reunited with her mother. Her cousin, Frieda Grayzel, also spoke multiple times as part of the Backstrom lecture series.

Finder, originally from Krakow, Poland, speaks about her experience as a young girl on Schindler's List. She survived the Krakow ghetto and labor in the Plaszow camp before working in Oskar Schindler's factory. Fridmann, originally from Mulhouse in Alsace-Lorraine, was captured as a young boy hiding in Vichy, France, and spent time in Dachau and Auschwitz, later escaping to the woods when the transport train he was on was derailed. Fridmann also discusses the deep psychological effects of the war on his family and how being a child a survivor impacted his postwar life.

Holocaust survivor Freida Grayzel discusses her experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Grayzel, originally from Tomaszow Mazowiecki, Poland, was a young child when the war began. She did forced labor in her hometown's ghetto and spent time in the Blizyn concentration camp before being transported to Auschwitz. In Auschwitz she and her cousin survived by living in a barracks with twins who underwent medical experiments; her cousin and mother also survived the camp and they were later reunited with her father.

Holocaust survivor Rena Greenup discusses her experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Greenup, a Sepharic Jew originally from Thessaloniki, Greece, was a child when the war began. Her family moved to Athens and were hidden in the basement of a Greek family before trying to escape by boat to Palestine via Turkey. After being caught by the Nazis, the family was imprisoned on an island and Greenup was sent to live with a family of German sympathizers; she and her parents survived the war.

Holocaust survivor Gerald Holton discusses his experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Holton, originally from Vienna, Austria, was a teenager when the Nazis invaded and was sent to England on a Kindertransport along with his brother. The two brothers managed to get their parents to England; Holton later came to America through a program at Wesleyan University. He also speaks about his childhood in Vienna and gives a general overview of the Kindertransports, and answers audience questions. Holton went on to become an award-winning physicist and philosopher of science.

Holocaust survivor Ben Jacobs discusses his experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Jacobs, originally from Poland, was a young dental student when he was deported to a labor camp. In 1943 he was sent to Auschwitz and, after surviving the death march, spent time in Buchenwald and other camps, including one on a ship. His dental skills enabled him to survive.

Holocaust survivor Max Michelson discusses his experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Michelson, orginally from Riga, Latvia, gives an overview of the Holocaust in Riga and particularly highlights the role of local population in the violence there. A teenager at the start of the war, Michelson did forced labor in the ghetto in Riga and avoided the Rumbula forest massacre. He later spent time in the Kaiserwald and Stutthof concentration camps and in a camp in Magdeburg, Germany.

Holocaust survivors Ruth and Michael Novice discuss their experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Ruth Novice, originally from Hamburg, Germany, was a young child when the war began and escaped to England with her family. She discusses what things were like for Jews in Germany right after the Nazis came to power. Her husband Michael Novice, originally from Warsaw, Poland, was smuggled out of the Warsaw Ghetto and ended up doing forced labor at an ironworks factory before being shipped to Auschwitz. He survived the death march from Auschwitz and was later in Buchenwald and Theresienstadt before being liberated.

Holocaust survivor Jack Trompetter discusses his experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Trompetter, who was born in Amsterdam in 1942, was put into hiding by his parents at three months old and went from a Quaker children's home to the home of a rural Dutch family in Heino where he was sheltered for the remainder of the war. He gives an overview of his parents' experience in the Holocaust in the Netherlands, discusses the challenges faced by his family coming back together at the end of the war, and answers questions.

Holocaust survivor Maurice Van Der Pol discusses his experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Van Der Pol, originally from Amsterdam, was a medical student when the war began and was hidden by a Christian woman along with some of his family members. In addition to his personal story, he gives an overview of the Holocaust in Amsterdam, speaks about dealing with his experiences later on in life, and answers audience questions.

Holocaust survivor Miriam Webb discusses her experiences during the Holocaust as part of the Philip N. Backstrom Survivor Lecture Series held during Northeastern University's annual Holocaust Awareness Week. Webb, originally from Lithuania, was a university student in the city of Kaunas when the war began. She was forced to live in a ghetto near Kaunas and survived by working in a kitchen and later hiding in a barn. She describes the brutality of the killings in Kaunas and answers audience questions.
